A very talented artist. I remember reading the Molesworth books at the age of 10 and loving them and especially Searle's very unique illustrations - "hullo clouds, hullo sky"!
My father casually remarked at that time "Searle was in many camps on the Burma Railway with me" and that started me asking questions about my father's past war time experiences. I've often wondered if Searle's slightly anarchic style was down to his time in the British Army, as my father also generally had little respect for authority.
