No Elvis, Beatles or the Rolling Stones in the November issue of
Mojo but look out for an eight-page farewell to the
Ramones comprising of an appreciation of the band by Charles Shaar Murray, an eyewitness account of the sessions for End of the Century, and one of Johnny’s last interviews. Add an article about the proto-punk significance of the
Saints, complete with a side-bar that cites Rocket from the Tombs, Dictators, Radio Birdman and the Hammersmith Gorillas (inc. picture), plus a short feature about the One Hit Wonder status of the
Barracudas and you have something worth visiting WH Smiths for ... apart from gawping at male “lifestyle” magazines. Hey, not me mister!

Yeah, but they still gave Sting an award, so fuck 'em ... I'd rather read old ishes of Ugly Things, BTC or surf the Goner board, NBT, I-94 kinda stuff ... Don't buy Mojo, they're fuckin' shitheads ... Joss
What always bothers me about Mojo is that they never make the extra step and really dig up some info on a lot of groups that regularly get a side-line somewhere. Heck, the Dictators got mentioned in the past two issues but you can bet your copy of America the Beautiful that they'll never get the full-length feature treatment. Having Byron Coley do a proto-punk piece is a great idea, but not when you only give the guy two sqaure inches room to make his point.
And yeah, the Saints piece is pretty good, as is the interview with Johnny (plus a cool pic of him in Amsterdam), but we'll have to suffer thru' countles pages on the Beatles again before they'll do anything this worthwhile again (and no, I don't hate the Beatles). If only Mike Stax could turn UT into a montly...
Amen, J! Yeah, they seem to have an accepted 'canon' of greats, and that's all you're ever gonna see on the front cover - most notable recollection is REM on the front, with the main article being a huge Patti Smith piece, which included a cobbled together bit with quotes from Michael Stipe about Mrs Smith ... In addition, apart from the major issue of PR control (which dictates that no mag will ever deviate from the 'press release' version of any story / review structure), basically, Mojo runs on a fanzine budget (and that's from the hoss's mouth), and like all EMAP publications, is just a sop for the advertising department, who spend most of the money collected by mag sales on getting more ads in, and the continuation of their massive marketing / publishing exec structure ... It's a vicious cycle which affects all glossy mags ... Aaagh, but don't start me talkin' ... Joss
Presumbly they do have the good manners to acknowledge the receipt of a submission to their "shitty" publication though. Particularly when you send it to them not once but twice. No names, no pack drill.
Well this month's CD has a cut on it by Robbie Faulks. I guess, a Robbie Fulks tribute act? It offers an opporchancity to get Robbie's take of "Cry Cry Cry" without you having to buy "Dressed In Black". The J. Cash tribute album not Kiss's Third...
I still say fuck 'em! And, Steve, yes, I know EXACTLY what you mean! Joss
