If any of you youngsters out there need some background info here; please check this lengthy, but very worthwhile, interview with Greg by Ken Shimamoto, originally published in Black to Comm. Damn, just thinking about how much he initiated just boggles the mind.
I just heard of Greg's passing. My heart goes out to his son and the rest of his family. I know that his health hadn't been good, but he was always such a young man in spirit.
That's soooo sad! My heart goes out to his family. A lotta people have ragged on Greg over the 'quality' and 'sources' of the rekkids he's put out over the past three decades, but he was an inspirational guy, and (really) we shan't see his kind again. I spent a very pleasant evening with Greg in London in the early '90s, but was puzzled to see that he hardly touched his dinner ... hanging out a few years later, I asked him if that was around the start of his health troubles, and he said that he didn't eat cos he was tripping his face off! Anyone who doubts Greg's sincerity should check out the downloadable archives of his Mojo Navigator mag (from 1966!), which you can access via: http://www.rockmine.music.co.uk/Archive/Library/Mojo.html
With regards to Pebbles, the "quality" complaint that some folks raise is a bit of a red-herring. One has to put the series into context and remember that when it originally appeared in the late seventies that 99% of the material was long out of print. The days of superbly anotated and mastered re-issues on Big Beat or Sundazed was a long way into the future and Greg was therefore doing the world one hell of a service. I guess most of us owe a lot to him for turning us onto some astounding music and thus influencing our perspective on life. Thanks Greg and good luck in the big used vinyl store in the sky.
Wow, this is truly sad. I'd just had an email exchange with him recently on the whole "history of punk" topic that was being discussed on the GaragePunk.com Forums. I just read about his passing there, too, which was really shocking. I don't know what to say. Does anyone know the cause of death? My sincerest condolences go out to Suzie and the rest of his family, friends, and everyone whose life he touched through his great work at Bomp!

Been out of the country for a couple o' days (more later) so excuse the lack of any follow ups on this. But here's the official press statement from Greg's wife Phoebe:
"It is with deepest regret that I must tell you that my husband, Greg Shaw, passed away in the hospital Tuesday night.
Greg had a vibrant spirit, but his physical health was always fragile. Last week, for reasons that are unclear, he developed an extremely high blood sugar and was rushed to the hospital. The level of blood sugar was so high that all of Greg’s vital functions were subjected to trauma, and he developed complications as a result. Nevertheless, for several days he remained in stable condition. He was conscious the entire time, and his doctors were quite optimistic that he would recover. Sadly and shockingly, he went into cardiac arrest on Tuesday night around 11:30pm. The wonderful people at the hospital worked for a long time to try and save him, and Greg fought very hard too. He was tenacious to the end.
Greg was given the very best care, and during his stay in the hospital he had the constant love and support of his family. His passing was not gentle, but I am comforted by the feeling that he is now at peace and free of all pain.
Tristan and I are grateful for the sympathy and support we have already received, and we ask for your prayers for Greg and for us throughout this difficult time. We also send our condolences to everyone who is sharing our grief.
Very best wishes to all of you,
Phoebe Shaw Tristan Shaw"Note to CS: No offence, but it seems kinda short on respect draggin' your personal fueds into this. We're paying respect to Greg here, anything else should be posted at a more relevant place for whatever topic you wanna discus...
